FARGO - A fire destroyed a large detached garage and damaged two vehicles in Fargo's historic Hawthorne neighborhood Tuesday, Sept. 25.
The fire was reported shortly before noon at 812 7th St. S., near Hawthorne Elementary School.
Battalion Chief Jason Ness said fire crews arrived to find heavy flames and knocked them down in about 15 minutes.
The fire spread from the two-story garage, which contained about nine rental spaces, to two vehicles nearby.
No one was was hurt in the fire, which fire officials determined was caused by welding work that ignited material in the garage.
The blaze filled the surrounding area with thick, black smoke. A plume of smoke could be seen from about a mile away.
At one point, as fire crews fought the blaze, an explosion came from one of the damaged vehicles. Firefighters also shouted, “Look out for the power lines!” as flames and smoke encroached on utility poles in a gravel alleyway.
